I've been riding (on road) for the past 9 years or so but thought that i would turn my hand to a bit of off roading and hopefully meet some new poeple at the same time.
I'm going bike shopping today looking for something like the DRZ400, WR450F, KTM 400EXC (not sure about the KTM as I've been told they are only as good as the person looking after it and require alot of TLC) or XR400. I dont have my mind set on these bikes so am open to other suggestions/opinions/reccomendations.
Once i have to bike will love to get out there with anyone that will take me, as I may need a little guidance.
Welcome to the TVTR , for what it worth i'd recommend getting a bike with a electric start ,which makes life much easier . I own a ktm 400 and don't find maintenance much bother really , had this one about 9 months and have had to change wheel bearings and the normal oil / filter changes that's all , hope to see you out soon.
Welcome to the TVTR. There's a good number of Plymouth lads that are often out green laning so you should find someone to take you out as soon as you have your bike.
A lot of peope would say 400+ cc bikes is quite a challenge for a newbie, and virtually all 250s will climb, cruise, lane at the same speed, but will be a lot more easier to handle. However some people have there mind set on what bike they want and get on fine with it. One thing I will add is a DRZ is the heaviest of all those beasts. I've had 2 x WR450s and a DRZ400 - and I know others with the DRZ. There are many-an-occasion where they are simply unable to lift them off the floor unaided. So of all the bikes you are interested in, I'd stay away from the Suzuki.
Greenlane motorcycles at Exeter have a WR250F and 450F in stock. I do find this dealer does have rather over-inflated prices though - but if you are a good negotiator maybe you could get it for a realistic price.
The main devon DTRF forum generally has plenty of members selling bikes - some cracking deals too. Not sure if its the time of year but actually not that many for sale on there right now.
After much deliberation and advice I decided to learn on a 250 then progress on to the 400's at a later date.
Got my little DR250 this afternoon. Just need to source some bits like filters and i'm good to go as far as the bike goes. Just need to sort out the rest now.
Hi Spider. Glad you sorted yourself out a bike. I am quite busy this week in work, but I am free for the two weeks after that. Gump and I normally head out through the week, so you are welcome to join us at any time. I generally lead with a sat nav and he follows with the video camera (catching all my radiator and lever trashing offs) LOL.
