Waterproofing electrics

Winter on its way- and probably a bit more water about.

Has anyone found a good way of waterproofing the electrics. I lost all lights last time out due to a poor connection from the generator and have just spent a couple of hours tracing the starter circuit to find out why my bike wont start on the button.

It finally turned out to be an intermittent fault due to a poor earth terminal.

I undestand that dielectric grease might do the job. is it any good? where can you get it? How do you apply it?

advice appreciated.

cheers
Mike

If you have a good contact already then any grease will protect it. Dielectric grease actually allows electricity to flow through it. This is great in an enclosed situation, like inside a sealed plug, but can be 'dangerous' out in the open as it allows the current to 'arc' across the grease to earth.
I would suggest a thorough overhaul of your joints and remove the ones you don't need. I fitted a new voltage rectifier on my CCM and cut the plugs out, soldered and heat-shrunk the joins. No more problems there then!
You could also wrap the vulnerable joints in an old bike tube (with zip ties) after applying an ordinary grease to the outside of the plug joint.
