Engine temp.

I just bought a Trail tech Vector for my KTM, cos those nice people in Austria let one of their retarded children build the ones they put on the 04 bikes as standard, and apparently I'm lucky its lasted as long as it has.
Anyway, amongst all the usual mph and trip meter stuff, it has a temp sensor for the top or the rad, and a function to show warning lights when its getting too hot - amber light for warmish, red light for shut it down now before it explodes. But you have to program in the temperatures at which you would like your lights to come on. Nothing happens at all until its 100 deg C.
So my question is this - how hot is too hot? I know my Fireblade is designed to shut down if it ever gets to 122 deg C, and under normal conditions it runs at a steady 89 deg C. If the Vector thing wont show anything at all til it gets to 100, then it must be expecting it to run hotter than that as normal. Anyone got any suggestions? I've never had a problem with the KTM getting hot, and I might not even bother with the temp sensor, but I am just interested to know.

Have a look at your radiator cap and see if it's got a Bar/PSI measurement on it. Water boils at 100 degs C at sea level but if you pressurise the container it increases the boiling point....2 Bar (approx 31psi) increases the boiling point of water to 120 degs C. Therefore your new display is perfectly well set to inform you if the temp goes over 100 degs!

I know that bit. Maybe I wasnt clear - it is up to me to set the temperature at which the overheating lights come on. How do I know how hot my engine is supposed to run under normal conditions, and how do I know what temperature to set the unit so the warning light comes on when it is too hot, but before it does any damage?

Ah ha. Go to the bit about checking your rad cap. If it's 2 bar thenI suggest you set the device to warn you when it's approaching 100 and demand attention when it gets to 115 smile

Ah, now we're getting somewhere. Rad cap says 1.4 on it. BUT, from what I can gather from the bumpf, the thing doesnt display anything til it gets to 100 degrees ie it starts at 100 and goes on from there.

1.4 = about 113degs so if it starts at 100 it would seem to be set at about right!
