So the meeting time was 08:45 at Chaddlewood garage, I arrived about 08:35 with Slider rider to find that most of the group was already there, fueled ready to go, we waited for the last few to arrive, I gave everyone a little bit of advise for the day in regards to safety, I also explained that Simms hill was planned in this route, everyone fancied having a ago and seemed almost excited about it, we then set off and it was about 09:00.
Our first lane was 202-157 followed by 158, the puddle in the middle of this one was nice and deep, most took to balancing there bike's along the bank which looked more daring than riding through the water but each to there own I suppose.
we then did 202-159 followed by the first challenge of the day at 154, most managed to clean the lane while the rest needed some encouragement to get over the step, then it was on to 202-120, 338, 085, 076 & 041.
We then reached 202-042 our first field crossing of the day and the MT 43's that most of us where using did surprisingly well, shortly after this lane a member of the group had a front wheel bearing collapse, so him and a friend said there goodbye's and set off for home.
The rest of us then went on to 191-096, 086 & 084 where we stopped and switched off our engines for a group of horse's, Karrie took the opportunity to take some cracking photo's before we all set off for 191-083,073 & 069, by the time I got my camera out everyone had crossed the ford, so I was only able to get a photo of Shaun (Lazychubbs) crossing it, I did ask if anyone would go back through so I could get some more photo's, but had no takers on this.
We got to the end of 191-069 where Chris's 2smoke did'nt want to start, fortunately he was probably the only member of the group who had one of these lithium ion batteries fitted, I can honestly say I was very impressed with it and definitely thinking of getting one myself, he was turning the engine over using the electric start for what seemed like an eternity, with no sign of battery fade what so ever, he could have probably put the bike in gear and rode it on the starter to his destination.
Anyway his bike finally started and we set off to 191-075 before stopping at Bovey Tracey garage for food & fuel, while we where there a lone rider saw us and asked politely if he could tag along for a little while, strangely enough, I had actually met and chatted to this guy on the lanes around Bovey Tracey in the past, so I allowed him to join us for a little while.
Fueled and fed we set off for 191-091 where just before the lane we met a very nervous young horse and rider, we stopped, switched off our engines and waited for the rider of the horse to signal for us to pass, the horse rider soon give us the thumbs up to pass which we all did cautiously and as quietly as possible.
We then turned into 191-091 followed by 191-101 at which point confusion hit the group, some went down 191-089 and some did 191-090, after a couple of text messages we arranged to meet at Simms hill as this was going to be the next lane anyway, I then pointed the group I was with in the right direction and then followed behind to make sure we did'nt loose anybody else.
We finally got to Simms, I turned the corner at the bottom ready to climb the hill only to find it was absolute chaos, there were bodies and bikes all over the place (no injuries, just people having a good time), I managed to find a path through the carnage without running anyone or there bikes over and made to the top, I then did the only sensible thing I could think of and got my camera out and started takeing photo's of the whole thing unraveling, there was people trying to get up, people trying to get down, people trying to help, clouds of smoke and bikes rolling backwards, finally everyone had made it to the top (looking a little warm) and we set off for 191-087 then up 191-089 where charlie had a lovely double badger in front of me, I got off and helped him on his way and then couldn't get going again myself, so I turned my bike around, headed back down for fresh run, I couldn't believe how slippery the rock surface was, it was like walking on a sheet of ice.
We then did 191-101, 103 and over the A38 to 202-007 where James had a lovely muddy badger, we crossed the water which was shallow for this time of year and on to 202-027.
We turned to ride up 202-026 where Karrie had a bit of a mare persuading her 2smoke to climb up the hill, she had to turn around and go back down to take a little run up, we then did 202-046, 066, 058, 056, 057, 065, 294, 090, 390, 089, 088 & 130 on exiting this lane onto tarmac road XR Pete had a bit of a tumble with a hard landing due to the mud on his tyres making it a bit slippery, his front wheel just disappeared from under him, we helped him up, made sure he was ok and not injured before getting his bike started and moving on.
We then did another field crossing at 202-129 (the MT43's did very well again), before dropping down into Avonwick where we said our goodbye's to some of the group including the extra one we picked up at Bovey Tracey.
The remainder of the group then went on to 202-172 & 171 where I asked if everyone wanted to go through the deep puddle in 202-179, everybody but one was up for it so off they went, the guy who didn't fancy it had just had his engine rebuilt after dropping his bike in this puddle not to long ago, so I took him around these next couple of lanes and met everyone else on the main road.
We then did 202-196, 195, 194 and finished with 202-193, where we discussed favourite bits of the day, said our goodbye's and headed for home.
Summery
Approx 7 hours, 105 miles and 51 lanes.
A few horses, great scenery, plenty of badgers (although I only saw 4 of them), plenty of laughs and happy bikers.
Big Thanks to Shaun (Lazychubbs) for sharing the leading and tec duties with me throughout the day and to James and Charlie for keeping the middle of the group together between lanes.
Great company, I look forward to meeting you all again soon.
If you could PM me either your TRF membership numbers or your name and rough address (Plymouth, Tavistock) ect. It would be much appreciated as I will need it for the run sheet.
Thats a great and detailed report Justin. Sounds like a fun day with plenty of badger spotting!!! Must have been fun going up Simms whilst avoiding bodies and bikes!!!
