Interest from Wiltshire

Received this email from Richard.  Posted it up so we can get some ideas as to what we can offer.  David

Hi Jeff?
This is Richard - run leader for one of the groups on the Wet n Windy in Wiltshire last year.
A group of us are thinking of a weekend of riding in your patch in the spring, maybe the end of March/April.  We were hoping that you and your fellow TRF members might be up for guiding us for a days riding on your lanes?
We are open to ideas, either just one day or two part days, what ever suits you dont want to clash with the Tamar run.  Not sure whether we are hard enough to camp at that time of year and probably not open either, so we might look for B&B.
If you can help what would you suggest would be a good starting/meeting point, so we can start to explore accommodation options.
Cheers
Richard

David, can you email Richard and provisionally say yes. I guess the best thing is to have a chat about dates and venue at the next meet.

Fixer something for the agenda!

Loads of questions to ask them....

How many will be coming so we know how many groups we'll need?
What tyres are they running on the rear? They were using big knobblies and they aren't suitable for places such as Muchlarnick and Washabrook.
Where do they want to stay? B&B, Hotel, Hostel???

What date is preferable for them so I can see what I've got planned?

I think Richard was the tall chap riding the BMW, am I right?.I'm happy to help in whatever capacity, but I hope they avoid Easter as the accommodation may be difficult then.

Further email from Richard.

Hi David,

I have registered just waiting for approval.

I think there will be around 10 of us and say a maximum of 14, it would
be best to assume that we will all have enduro tyres rather than trials
tyres, although some may swop for trials on the day.

My suggestion is for arriving on Saturday, pitch tents, short ride out
in the afternoon (guided or unguided). Longer guided ride out on the
Sunday 9.30 - 4.00, return to Witshire. Dates could be:

28/29 Mar
4/5 Mar
18/19 Mar
2/3 May

I will keep an eye on the forum thread.

Richard was OK'd last night so he's free to join in.

2 groups with 14 people then.

No problems with me but has anybody got any ideas where they can all stay?

Here's a couple of campsites worth a try; I think 'Higherlongford' is John Issacs (DGTRF) place. Not 100% sure though.

I think you're right Jeff about Higher Longford and Jon Isaacs.May be his folks place 'cos Chris M told me Jon had started his own business (mini- bikes) in Tavistock.

I know that Jon still lives on the park, but I don't think they run the day to day business anymore.

Jon does indeed have his own business on ebay Minithump and a unit down at Pitts Cleave in Tavistock.

Hi Folks,

Thanks for the info about accommodation.  At present our favoured date to visit your neck of the woods is 2/3 May.  We know its the bank holiday but seems to be favourite.

Our monthly meeting is tomorrow and snow permitting I hope to get names and numbers for those interested.  A round robin email has only elicited four takers so far!  So it might end up being quite a small group.

I think there is a good chance that we will all have trials tyres on the rear and I will be giving it a crack on my BMW650.

Cheers Richard

Hi Richard, I'm pleased things are moving forward for your trip. It would be good if you can let us know on Wednesday what's happening 'cos we have our meeting on Thursday night ( our meetings are not regular, just when we feel there's things to discuss and it's time for a bit of a social) and maybe we can get things sorted out for you then. Don't worry about numbers.. many or few we'll give you a good time. Bob.

Hi Captain Slow,

Hope you are blogging as you go to you meeting!!  We are definite for the bank holiday weekend 2/3/4.  We will probably arrive Fri evening and stay till Monday. We will use one of the holiday parks as our base as suggested neaer Tavistock.  We dont expect you to guide us for three days, we would welcome your company and guidance as much or as little on any of these three days.  Numbers about seven at present.

Cheers

Richard

Hi REM

At our meeting last night we did get word of your reply and so we've formulated a plan to guide you for the Saturday and the Sunday. As we'll build these runs into our normal TVTR runs we'll probably split your group into 2 and take you off in different directions with the groups swapping for the 2nd day.

Please let us know of final numbers nearer the time and also what bikes you are bringing if possible?

Cheers
Fixer

Hi Rem

I'd suggest you stay here as it is much better placed than Tavistock for Trail Riding as well as food, shopping etc.

Hi Richard, If you're happy with our suggestion you will cut down your tarmac miles if you camp more centrally to the areas we will ride. Have a look at this, on the edge of Plymouth rather than Tavistock. Bob

Thanks Fixer this sonds like a great plan and joining in with your group rides on the Saturday and Sunday is brilliant - thanks very much.  We take your point about Plymouth being more central to the riding.  The campsite may be our back stop as we are hoping to find something with a solid roof if there are just 6 or 7 of us. so we are looking into that now.

Hi folks,

Just to update you....

There are currently 8 riders confirmed. We have decided (against your advice) to stay at the Langstone Manor Park and have hired a couple of caravans, but more than happy to meet at your starting point nearer Plymouth. We will just have to get up earlier in the mornings.

I think we will all be on trials tyres apart from one, Fraser (the other Wilts run leader - fast group) who is game for anything you can throw at him. Let me know if there is a pressing environmental need for trials tyres on the proposed routes and I will try to persuade him otherwise.

A couple of the riders are planning to green lane from Wiltshire down to Tavistock on the Friday. Can you suggest any routes they might take?

Cheers

Richard

Hi Guys,

Unfortunately I now cannot make the visit still planned for May bank holiday weekend.  Out of redundancy comes good things - I am off to work in Mozambique for six months leaving next Saturday.  Hope to get in some trail riding whilst there.

Keith Johnston is now coordinating in my absence.  I have sent an email to Rain Monkey to ask for direct contact to be made with him.

Thanks for your support in getting the trip together - I am sure it will be a good one and am sad not to be joining in.

See you later in the year maybe.

Cheers Richard

RE: Interest from Wiltshire 2nd and 3rd May

Been in contact with Keith who gave me the following information.  He said they would be staying at Langstone Manor Caravan park outside Tavy arriving on Friday 1/5 and riding out on the 2nd and 3rd.   9 people are coming down, half of which would be classed as a slow group and the other half as a fast group. 2 will be going back on Saturday night so there would only be 7 for the sunday.

So we need to find out who is willing to get involved.

Suggestion is 2 runs out on Saturday (Fast and Slow)  therefore 2 run leaders.  Slow group would like stops, fast group would like to do as many lanes as possible ( Fixer this sounds like the one for you).

On Sunday 1 group running with stops if the fast group has been tied out enough on Saturday if not 2 groups.

Was suggested that we meet at Langstone Manor but along way for the south hams boy to go. Suggestions?

I'll put myself down to run with the slow group (as I like stops)

Please put yourselves forward to run lead or to just join a group.  David

RE: Interest from Wiltshire

Their original plan was 7 then 6 people and I was taking them out on Sat and hoping Bob would take them out on Sunday.
If they want to run two groups on Saturday then we'll need another run leader if Bob will do his run on Sunday with the remaining 7 riders.
Or...
I take all 9 on Sat with a TEC and possibly one other and that leaves someone else to run out on the Sunday as I don't like to Green Lane on Sundays.

Suggestions please

Cheers Bob, if you do your run on Sunday I can take all of them out on Saturday but I won't be out later than 4pm as my wife would like to see me on my birthday!

Any one else up for taking an 'easy group' out on Saturday - 2nd May?

Fixer, where is the best meeting place for you on Saturday?  Is meeting at Langstone Manor at 0900 for 0930 OK? David

Would love to help but Wife's birthday on Saturday too.

I don't think I will bother asking just on the off chance, I would like to retain both testicles!

Sunday might be able to sneak out if anyone would like any help.

I assume that Fixer will be 'doing' the South Hams on the Saturday so why not ask the Wiltshire group to meet him at the Watermark Centre? It'll save Fixer and TEC an awful lot of road work.

Then on Sunday morning i'll meet them at their campsite to start my run. To clarify though, am I taking them all out on Sunday so we don't need another run leader? Bob

Hi Bob,
Talking to Keith it did seem that there was a slow (liking stops) and a fast group.  If we could get together 2 groups on Sunday that would be good but I don't think essential. If Fixer is doing the South Hams it would make sense for the fast group to make it to Ivybridge. Any run leaders out there for the slow group on Saturday?  David

Saturday 2nd May...

Timus has agreed to take the fast group on Saturday with, possibly, Merlin acting as TEC - to be confirmed by Merlin if he's available. As we don't know how many want to be in the fast/slow group I would think that both groups may have spare places for those TVTR Members that would like to come for a ride out.

LenB has offered to ride TEC for me and I'll be taking the slow, but scenic, group out.

Sunday 3rd May...

At the moment Cap'n Slow will be taking the remainder of the Wiltshire contingent out for his usual route around West Devon/East Cornwall. If anyone else is available to lead a group that day please speak up.

Cheers

Meeting places....

As there are very few lanes around the Langstone Holiday Centre and even less lanes between Tavy and Ivybridge therefore the starting point for Saturday's run will be in Ivybridge.

Saturday - Wiltshire group to meet TVTR Run Leaders at The Watermark Centre in IVYBRIDGE 09.30am (SX636 561)

Sunday - Morrisons' Car Park Tavistock - 09.30 (SX479 730)

Yep, as long as bike goes through MOT on wed am and I can get service done in time (valves are past schedule timings) I will lead the fast group on the sunday 3rd (TEC wanted).

Will start in Devon in to east Cornwall for a loop and back to Tavistock I think at the moment.

Does anyone know the ability of the faster group and how many in it? I would like to do some challenging lanes (Morden etc) but don't want to get hung up on them for too long!evileye
